  • Discussion about the book in Bookcrossing

At long last, we are drawing to a close of our lengthy journey into the Second World War. Throughout the year, Erik has taken us from German’s rising strength in arms in the 1930 despite the embargo of the Treaty of Versailles and Churchill’s warning and foreboding at the time, German’s invasion of Poland, the fall of France, the blitz in London, through the Northern African battles and the liberation of Italy.

The 6th volume covers from the Normandy landing through the Potsdam Conference during which Churchill lost the general election in Great Britain. It’s not possible to cover all the important events in this period, and in the discussion, we focused on the dawn of the Iron Curtain, which began its sinister course before Germany was defeated.

The Warsaw Uprising in the summer of 1944

The Russian summer offensive brought their armies in late July to the river Vistula, on the edge of taking the entire Poland from Germans. The Polish Underground Army, which owed all allegiance to the Polish Government in exile in London, had raised a general insurrection against the Germans in order to speed the liberation of their country.

When the uprising began, the Soviets, instead of increasing bombing of German positions in Warsaw, stopped air activity. When the Polish was suffering from extreme shortage of food supply and ammunition, the Soviets dismissed their plea for help, and they didn’t allow British and American aircraft to drop supplies to the Polish by refusing refueling site in Russia territory. The situation in Warsaw was extremely desperate. It was only when the Polish was severely weakened and the uprising was on the point of collapse, that Russia resumed bombing and allowed supplies to the Polish. “The struggle in Warsaw lasted more than 60 days. Of the 40,000 men and women of the Polish Underground Army about 15,000 fell. Out of a population of a million nearly 200,000 had been stricken. When the Russians entered the city three months later they found little but shattered streets and the unburied dead. Such was their liberation of Poland.” By deliberately disengaging Russian armies from the uprising against German in Warsaw, the Soviets intention is undoubtedly exposed: that is to weaken pro-West elements so that a Russian-dominant regime was set up.

That was not all the story. When Poland was liberated, Russia denied Polish free elections despite its promise to Western allies, denied ally’s appointments of ambassadors to Poland (thus isolating Poland from the world) and arrested pro-West generals and politicians, when they headed to Moscow for negotiations after receiving Soviets promise of safety, on treason charges.

Now we could understand how deep the antagonism between Polish and Russian goes.

Churchill and Roosevelt were concerned about the Soviets influence over a large part of Europe. During conference with the Soviets leader Stalin, they persisted in obtaining his promise of free elections in sovereign states occupied by the Russian army. The Potsdam conference among the three powers was also intended to decide the future of Europe and the rest of the world.

However, history has shown that Russia seems to get what it wanted. The Eastern Europe was very much in Russian hands and the cold war last for almost half a decade. How came that Britain and America failed to check the Russians? Two major events happened at the time as if history played a joke on human race. President Roosevelt died at the climax of WW2 just before German’s surrender. Truman stepped, almost a new man to the game. He didn’t enjoy the same prestige and influence as Roosevelt. America is much weakened with the change of the political leadership. When German was defeated, a general election was held in Britain, and Churchill lost. Now it’s obvious that both Britain and America are now in a much weakened position against the Soviets. In the USA, there is still much isolationist mood that Americans wanted to withdraw troops from the European theatre and focus on the war against Japan in the Pacific region.

Remarking on the two fateful events leading up to a prolonged cold war, Jim commented, echoed by Ruby, that it’s providence.

Now what’s Churchill’s view over the use of the atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, which brought to a speedy collapse and surrender of Japan but cost tens of thousands of civilian lives?

He still supported the use of atomic bombs because Britain and America thought that invasion of Japan’s main island would cost many lives, not only British and American troops but also Japanese civilians; in addition, the war would last several years. Before the drop of the atomic bombs, leaflets were dropped in Japanese cities warning civilians of severe bombing ahead but the atomic bomb was a secret and how could civilians foresaw its devastating power?

Erik commented that Britain and America were more concerned about saving their soldier’s lives rather than Japanese civilians.
