A recurring theme throughout Anna Quindlen's How Reading

Changed My Life is the comforting premise that readers are never

alone. "There was waking, and there was sleeping. And then there

were books," she writes, "a kind of parallel universe in which

anything might happen and frequently did, a universe in which I

might be a newcomer but never really a stranger. My real, true

world." Later, she quotes editor Hazel Rochman: "Reading makes

immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but, most

important, it finds homes for us everywhere." Indeed, Quindlen's

essays are full of the names of "friends," real or fictional--Anne

of Green Gables and Heidi; Anthony Trollope and Jane Austen, to

name just a few--who have comforted, inspired, educated, and

delighted her throughout her life. In four short essays Quindlen

shares her thoughts on the act of reading itself ("It is like the

rubbing of two sticks together to make a fire, the act of reading,

an improbable pedestrian task that leads to heat and light");

analyzes the difference between how men and women read ("there are

very few books in which male characters, much less boys, are

portrayed as devoted readers"); and cheerfully defends middlebrow

literature:

Most of those so-called middlebrow readers would have readily

admitted that the Iliad set a standard that could not be matched by

What Makes Sammy Run? or Exodus. But any reader with common sense

would also understand intuitively, immediately, that such

comparisons are false, that the uses of reading are vast and

variegated and that some of them are not addressed by Homer.

The Canon, censorship, and the future of publishing, not to

mention that of reading itself, are all subjects Quindlen addresses

with intelligence and optimism in a book that may not change your

life, but will no doubt remind you of other books that did. --Alix

  • Beautiful and intimate essay of a reader’s journey

    作者: 发布时间:2013-03-05 21:40:59

“Sedition has been the point of the printed word almost since its inception.” The sentence tugged at my heart. I know it well because at where I came from, print, among many other ways of expression, has been an excruciatingly censored business. Every reader has his or her own journey with books, the quote reminded me mine. While the author’s journey was a precocious and quiet child who breezed through the literary world to appease her romantic and nomadic sense. I was more like a begrudging malcontent who accidentally caught a glimpse of dystopia behind the facade of the Potemkin world she lived in, got frustrated by the absence of books in her language to make sense of this incongruity, turned to another language for deliverance.

Books give us the ultimate freedom, freedom of the mind. “Reading makes immigrants of us all,” the writer wrote, “It takes us away from home, but, most important, it finds homes for us everywhere.” In a sense, reading is better than traveling; because it not only allows us to be travelers of space, but also to be travelers of time. The power of books not only transcends borders and cultures but also transcends generations and hierarchy. Books are the only place where we can meet the noble minds of the past epoch.

The author penned the world of reading in a romantic and relatable way. She talked about escapism: how readers are dissatisfied people embarking a nomadic journey in mind. She talked about feminism: how vicarious experiences through reading compensated the discontent of an unlived life that caused by the stereotype and limitation enforcing upon women when she grew up. She talked about the snobbishness and uselessness associated with reading too much in popular culture. Of course, she talked about pure affection for the activity of reading. I found resonance when she wrote “those of us who read because we love it more than anything, who feel about bookstores the way some people feel about jewelers.” I smiled, because that is exactly how I feel. Is that one of wonders of reading? To eradicate mental isolation, to find people who think the way you do, because in books, you always find them.

Like many passionate readers and writers, she also expressed worry about the dominance of Internet threatening the printing industry. Ray Bradbury expressed the same concern in Fahrenheit 451 when the TV industry in its vibrant and ascending state. But history tells us the books and reading will never die. There is no form of media more emotion-evolving than book; there is no form of media other than books can hold mass details at the same time still manage to leave room for imagination. When was the last time you were excited to see your beloved novel’s movie adaptation, only disappointed on the road back home. For me, it is every time. Readers are not only being told a story; readers have to participate, use their imagination and emotion to unfold the writers’ world. This is the beauty of reading, it is a personal journey between a reader and the writer.

This book is beautifully written. I believe everybody who loves to read will find something they can relate from reading this book. It will make you smile.
