  关于自然保护的绘本，故事有点沉重。

  我想大概很多人都有周游世界的梦想，而真正做到放下一切从头开始背上背包一步一个脚印去丈量世界的又有几人呢，于我这样的普通人来说，大低小低是生活的勇者，是可以为梦想买单的英雄。每次当他们又走到新的国度，遇到新的人，开始新的故事的时候，我隔着手机屏幕，都可以感受到他们此刻的内心的温度。相信这也是他们写这本书的初衷，记录下旅行的美好，期许每位看到的人都可以等到陪伴他们旅行的人，去看遍山川湖海和星光。我好希望有更多的人可以看到他们的努力和才华，被这种真诚的，好似邻家小伙伴讲述旅行故事的方式感染。

• A young man climbs through ‘The Line of Beauty’

  ‘It is to be observed, that straight lines vary only in length, and therefore are least ornamental. That curved lines as they can be varied in their degrees of curvature as well as in their lengths, begin on that account to be ornamental. That straight and curv’d lines join’d, being a compound line, vary more than curves alone, and so become somewhat more ornamental. That the waving line, or line of beauty, varying still more, being composed of two curves contrasted, becomes still more ornamental and pleasing, insomuch that the hand takes a lively movement in making it with pen or pencil.’

  The line of beauty in Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty refers to the male arse and Hogarth's Ogee arch. Well, ‘The Line of Beauty’ is a gay literature and the Booker Prize winner novel.

  Nick Guest, the protagonist, a new Oxford graduate is living with the Fadden family as a guest in 80s. Meanwhile he is starting a relationship with a black man Leo. This is the first part of the story which Alan Hollinghurst called it ‘The Love-Chord’. It is an age of innocence. Nick meets Leo through a personal ad in newspaper. They immediately have sex in the Notting Hill garden. Nick also has a secret crash on the Fadden boy Toby, who was undoubtly STRAIGHT. Without surprise, under the theory of the line of beauty, he is direct but rather dull.

  The second part comes as ‘To Whom Do You Beautifully Belong?’ when Nick established a risky relationship with Wani after Leo’s leave. Wani becomes Nick’s lover as well as patron, who is an extremely beautiful, but corrupted wealthy Oxford lad. While it was English, there is always class. It seems that class structure does not disappeared from the contemporary novels, though class distinctions had themselves vanished (had it? It is claimed that modern Britain is a state of middle class. This is probably true, however, under and upper classes continue their existences.) While comparing with the similar theme of Jelinek’s The Piano Teacher, Zoë Heller’s Notes on a Scandal obviously takes great account on the class distinction of her characters.

  Nick, like Alan Hollinghurst himself comes from a middle class family, is a sensitive, aesthete young man. From Fedden’s Notting Hill House to Lord Kessler (Rachel’s brother)’s country estate, he is easily attached to the world with plausible painting, furniture, décor. It is reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited: When a middle class boy comes across an upper class family.

  Nick’s encounter with Lord Kessler in the later’s library almost gives me an impression（or fascination）of a romantic attachment between the two. However, nothing beyond a little chat on Henry James and Trollope. An adventured young boy comes along with an experienced old man, isn’t it platonic! Well, the author has already taken it in his first novel ‘The Swimming Pool Library’.

  The last part of the story is ‘The End of the Street’. Wani is dying of AIDs. Nick is lucky to be negative. His climbing within the prestige circle finally ends up after he was thrown out from the Fedden family. Nick drifted as his surrounding drifted. But he can still see the beauty of the lines.

  The story ends while Nick is standing in the corner of the street after leaving the Notting Hill house. The tune of the long story is slow but smooth. The divided three parts compound a tip-over ‘U’ curved story line. In the first part Nick is climbing to the top of the world with the rising gradient, then the curves changes direction in part three while Nick falls down to the earth through the falling gradient. This is Hogarth’s ‘line of beauty’. Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty’ is also aesthetic and intelligent.

• 态度诚恳，极为实用

  这绝对是值得推荐的经典著作。西尔斯是医学博士，跟他的妻子育有八个孩子，理论与实践兼擅。这不是关键，关键是作者的态度务实而诚恳。不像医生喜好夸大病情，也不似国内的某些专家，把怀孕看得比天还大，然后这也做不得那也吃不得。作者注意到了各个孕妇个体的差异，既回答了怀孕过程中的各种问题（哪怕是1％的人会有的罕见问题），又清楚地指出99％的妈妈们不必为此过于忧虑。因此，这虽然是一本美国人写的书，对于中国的孕妇来说，非常实用。

  唯一不实用的是，书里常常提到，孕妇有什么问题，可以和医生慢慢沟通，什么“制定分娩计划，并和医生讨论”之类，太不符合国情了，中国哪个医生，会静下心来耐心地听患者说话，会和你讨论分娩计划？从这个461页的怀孕百科，居然也能看出中美两国的巨大差距。这也真是没有办法的事。
