Like everyone in Marion, Carr knew the basic details of the

lynching even as a child: three black men were arrested for

attempted murder and rape, and two of them were hanged in the

courthouse square, a fate the third miraculously escaped. Meeting

James Cameron–the man who’d survived–led her to examine how the

quiet Midwestern town she loved could harbor such dark secrets.

Spurred by the realization that, like her, millions of white

Americans are intimately connected to this hidden history, Carr

began an investigation into the events of that night, racism in

Marion, the presence of the Ku Klux Klan–past and present–in

Indiana, and her own grandfather’s involvement. She uncovered a

pattern of white guilt and indifference, of black anger and fear

that are the hallmark of race relations across the country.

In a sweeping narrative that takes her from the angry energy of a

white supremacist rally to the peaceful fields of Weaver–once an

all-black settlement neighboring Marion–in search of the good and

the bad in the story of race in America, Carr returns to her roots

to seek out the fascinating people and places that have shaped the

of her own family’s secrets offers a fresh examination of the

jail cells in Marion, Indiana, and beaten before a howling mob. Two

of them were hanged; by fate the third escaped. A photo taken that

night shows the bodies hanging from the tree but focuses on the

faces in the crowd—some enraged, some laughing, and some subdued,

perhaps already feeling the first pangs of regret.

Sixty-three years later, journalist Cynthia Carr began searching

the photo for her grandfather’s face.

  那么蛋白质来源在哪？不知道作者为什么这么执着于不吃牛肉。是不是美国的肉类动物中只有牛是吃转基因玉米的？但是在中国不止是牛！猪、羊、鸡也都吃谷类的饲料，比如玉米。是不是这些动物肉类也不能吃了？另外大豆也不能吃的话，那么我们该从何处摄取蛋白质呢？蛋白质也是人体的重要组成部分啊！我不是在质问，也不是在吐槽。我是真的很想问问作者，很想有人能解答我的问题。

  我说的这点，是书里非常小的一个部分。

  鹿黑娃还很小时，就说：嘉轩叔的腰挺的太直了。白家待鹿三一家绝对无可挑剔，但黑娃自小便跟白家不亲，从上一辈的白嘉轩，到同辈的白孝文、孝武，他都心有隔阂，走不近。

  黑娃与白家不亲的原因之一，是因为他仇富。鹿兆鹏拿冰糖来给他吃，他震惊世上还有这么好吃的东西。但隔日兆鹏再给他水晶饼干，他却丢掉，说：除非你天天给我吃这么好吃的东西。事隔多年，黑娃当了土匪，打劫时抢到几袋冰糖，手下的人在哄抢，他却对着冰糖撒一泡尿。到后来的闹农斗富，黑娃比谁都搅得欢。

  黑娃的父亲鹿三，一辈子在白家做长工，对白家的仁义心存感恩，也希望黑娃可以和他一样。偏黑娃是个与他性子差太多的娃娃。黑娃看见他爹在白家做长工，心里是感到自己低人一等的。他不爱读书。白家让黑娃和自家两个儿子一起去读书，还给他解决了学费等一切问题，让他有机会进了学堂。黑娃对此事绝不会是单一的感激。他反而往返行之，他不满，他的心性容不得这样的施舍。于是，黑娃不爱去学堂。他的不爱，估计多少是出于对白家的叛离。

  但是鹿子霖家也是大富，却不给黑娃陌生感。他对鹿家的男人，上至子霖下至兆鹏兆海兄弟，都不由得心生好感。他自己说不出这种好感的具体由来，只是觉得深眼窝长睫毛的鹿家人都看着亲切，不像白家人都是一本正经，腰杆儿挺的笔直。后来故事慢慢铺开，确实，鹿子霖的腰杆儿挺得不直。腰挺的不直，对人的姿态便低。人要往上够，总是不容易的，但是往下趴，是轻而易举的事。对于黑娃来说，白嘉轩是需要他踮着脚往上够的，他够不着，就觉得有某种压迫，让他心生自卑。但是鹿子霖是待他亲近的，他无需费力，平身就可触摸。

  这也是黑娃跟白家不亲的另一个原因：白家给他道德压迫，让他总不自在，让他简直生恨。

  白嘉轩是白鹿原上道德的典范与表率。除了用计换了鹿子霖家的那块白鹿出没的坡地，他自认一生未做任何亏己心损人利的事。他的腰挺的笔直，直到后来被黑娃吩咐人戳瘫了，他道德的骨架反而挺的更直。正是这种笔直，给黑娃造成了道德压迫。白家的上上下下，老老少少，都是一副道德正然的样子，黑娃的心性最忍受不住这个。

  人的心性有天生的成分，也有后来打磨的原因。黑娃是书里打磨心性最明显的一个角色。而打磨的方式和表现，便是道德上的认知改变。

  黑娃跟着gong产dang闹过农打过仗，当过土匪，后来被国min党招安，去保安团当了营长。他折腾了一圈，最后回到了白鹿原，拜了朱先生为师，认真“学为好人”来。这一学，就把他的心性完全的磨成了另一个形状。他怕是再不会痛恨嘉轩叔的腰太直了，因为现在他们基本上拥有了同样的道德观念，白嘉轩已对他不存在压迫了。

  白家的道德压迫，在自家人白孝文身上是体现的最彻底的。孝文是白嘉轩认定的下一任族长，有学识，腰杆儿也直。只是，鹿子霖一招美人计，让孝文进了小娥的窑洞。孝文原先笔直的腰杆儿现在弯了。讽刺的地方在于，孝文一脱下裤子，那玩意儿就不行了，再穿上却复好。直到孝文被白嘉轩惩处，脸面在白鹿村丢尽，他于是在白天不忌讳的进了小娥家，问题却神奇的消失了。上面的脸不要了，腰杆儿不直了，下面的那玩意儿就起来了。

  这里说的“压迫”，绝不是贬义词，只是中性。群体生活，个人的存在总受到周围的辐射与影响。仿佛萨特存在主义的那套：他人就是地狱。在这书里，白嘉轩是一杆旗，始终挺得笔直。他的身上有作者着墨很多的特性，是最朴质的道德。我个人觉得，这种道德不能丢，不管多久，我们的腰杆儿都要是直的。
