内容简介:
A uniquely revealing biography of two eminent twentieth century American women. Close friends for much of their lives, Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead met at Barnard College in 1922, when Mead was a student, Benedict a teacher. They became sexual partners (though both married), and pioneered in the then male-dominated discipline of anthropology. They championed racial and sexual equality and cultural relativity despite the generally racist, xenophobic, and homophobic tenor of their era. Mead’s best-selling Coming of Age in Samoa (1928) and Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935), and Benedict’s Patterns of Culture (1934), Race (1940), and The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946), were landmark studies that ensured the lasting prominence and influence of their authors in the field of anthropology and beyond.
With unprecedented access to the complete archives of the two women—including hundreds of letters opened to scholars in 2001—Lois Banner examines the impact of their difficult childhoods and the relationship between them in the context of their circle of family, friends, husbands, lovers, and colleagues, as well as the calamitous events of their time. She shows how Benedict inadvertently exposed Mead to charges of professional incompetence, discloses the serious errors New Zealand anthropologist Derek Freeman made in his famed attack on Mead’s research on Samoa, and reveals what happened in New Guinea when Mead and colleagues engaged in a ritual aimed at overturning all gender and sexual boundaries.
In this illuminating and innovative work, Banner has given us the most detailed, balanced, and informative portrait of Mead and Benedict—individually and together—that we have had.

Reviews of Books
Reviewed work(s): Lois W. Banner. Intertwined Lives: Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, and Their Circle. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 2003. Pp. xii, 540. $30.00.
Andrea Walton, Indiana University, Bloomington
In 1959, noted anthropologist Margaret Mead, curator of the National Museum of History, published An Anthropologist at Work, a compendium of letters, diary entries, poems, and other writings selected to document the anthropological career of Ruth Benedict (1887–1948), her Columbia University mentor, colleague, friend, and lover. Benedict had weathered the gender politics of being one of the few women in Columbia's graduate faculty and had garnered both praise and criticism for applying the concept of pattern to the study of culture. Mead's 1959 portrait, together with her later volume Ruth Benedict (1974), were Mead's efforts to define and protect Benedict's legacy. Mead depicted Benedict as a scientist whose bestselling Patterns of Culture (1934), a defense of cultural relativism and a critique of Western society, and The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture (1946), a configurationist study of Japanese culture, were landmark studies. In turn, Mead also published her own story in Blackberry Winter (1972), which addressed not only her career but also the personal and professional significance of her three marriages.
In the past thirty years, a number of biographers (notably Judith Modell, Margaret Caffrey, Jane Howard, and Mead's daughter Mary Catherine Bateson) have relied on these standard sources, as well as on archives at Vassar College and the Library of Congress, to study Benedict and Mead. The portraits appearing to date have generally told one woman's story, albeit set, inevitably, against the backdrop of the Benedict‐Mead friendship. By contrast, Lois Banner's book, as the title suggests, is an ambitious biography focusing directly on the multilayered intimate and intellectual ties between Benedict and Mead. Further, Banner's is the first study of Benedict and Mead to draw on revealing personal correspondence opened only recently, with the observance of the Mead centennial in 2000–2001.
Banner was attracted to Benedict and Mead as subjects by their “importance … to twentieth‐century feminism,” finding their ideas prescient of later advances in gender theory (p. ix). Her book arrives at its thought‐provoking interpretations by way of history, literary scholarship, women's studies, and queer theory to reveal what Banner believes existing portraits of Benedict and Mead to varying degrees have masked. As Banner explains, even if An Anthropologist at Work was, in Mead's words, no “detective story” (p. 4), the carefully orchestrated book nonetheless provides a host of clues as to the interconnections between Benedict and Mead—guarded during their lifetimes and heretofore left relatively unprobed by biographers—as do the correspondence and manuscripts that Benedict and Mead left behind. Mining the historical record, Banner sets out to uncover the hidden story of Benedict and Mead's friendship.
Banner begins her study—a “geography of gender” (p. 7)—with a lengthy discussion of Benedict and Mead's trip to Rome in 1926, where they toured the Sistine Chapel. As Banner explains, Benedict and Mead had remarkably different reactions while viewing Michelangelo's Sibyls. In Benedict's eyes, these figures evoked the “beautiful people” of her fantasy world (p. 4). By contrast, Mead, who prized femininity, saw no beauty in the strong‐bodied figures, describing them as “outsized demagogues” (p. 7). As Banner elaborates, Benedict's and Mead's different sensibilities, evident in their divergent reactions to the image of the Sibyls, drove a wedge between the two women, and yet their lives were intimately connected and their enduring friendship, in turn, influenced their connections to friends, family, and colleagues.
Benedict and Mead had met in 1922, four years before the Sistine Chapel incident, at Barnard College, the women's coordinate college of Columbia University. Mead was an undergraduate majoring in English. Benedict, then Franz Boas's graduate teaching assistant at Barnard, was fifteen years Mead's senior. She was married and struggling to forge a university career. Over the next twenty‐five years they read and critiqued each other's work, helped breathe intellectual life into the developing field of cultural anthropology, confronted the hostility and competitiveness of male Boasians, and negotiated their differences. Benedict was “introspective and insecure” (p. 3); Mead was talkative, a bold orchestrator. Both subscribed to free‐love ideals and took male and female lovers; both married and divorced. Through the study of non‐Western cultures they came to understand sexuality and themselves. Benedict ultimately identified as a lesbian while Mead, rejecting the polarity of Western notions of male and female, embraced a more fluid bisexuality. Through Banner's lens, we see more clearly how the concerns and passions of these two intellectuals reflected the historical moment in which they lived, and how their personal questions regarding sexuality and sexual identity deeply influenced their lives and work.
