  • Best work I’ve read from JG so far

There’s this story that John Green talked about a few times about graffitis, birthdays, and the war in Iraq. And he said it’s difficult to imagine what other people may feel, but you could always try to, and books, stories they help you to empathise with people.

I personally don’t agree with a lot of the things that Aza believed in, but I can understand how her mental Illness and her past affected her hence why she might feel that way. JG really knows how to make his characters come alive.

No, I don’t find Aza and Davis pretentious. I don’t think they look like two middle aged people. Teenagers could be smart, sensitive, and they could be like anyone else. Teenagers could relate to them. They could talk about the universe, life and death, and how your thoughts are or aren’t you. I wasn’t exactly like that when I was 16, but 18, maybe. I guess you can say I’m biased, but I do relate to them or I can empathise with them mostly.

Alright, you can definitely find these teenagers annoying and pretentious, but there’s one thing you gotta give JG credit for, and that’s how he portrayed anxiety and OCD. He in no way glorified or romanticised mental illness. It is what it is. Aza probably would get better in time, but she’s not going to be cured by falling in love with some boy (a great boy). It’s painful, it’s suffocating, and it hurts you more because you know it hurts other people too. This book certainly raises awareness of mental illness, and I hope now people can understand it better.

Maybe you can’t relate to Aza, Davis, or even Daisy, but there’s one feeling that could be universally understood, and that’s love. It is always different, but nonetheless the same.

I absolutely adored Davis & Aza (again, great job John Green). Almost every line with them together screamed that “this would not work”, but I so badly wanted it to work. But of course it didn’t work. This is John Green that we’re talking about.

At first I didn’t like Daisy and thought she would be a self-centred mean girl, but boy was I wrong. I still don’t really care about her but what she and Aza had was an amazing friendship. Also the love between Aza and her Mom (and Dad), and Davis and Noah, although only briefly touched. And Davis and his Dad. That chapter really broke my heart a little, even though you could see it coming.

So it’s okay if you can’t relate to them, or even empathise with them. But you got to admit that the issue of mental illness was well addressed. And as always, he did a good job at portraying love and relationships.

I agree that the “plot” is going at an agonisingly slow rate, seriously. However it did not bother me because once I’ve established the fact that this isn’t a detective story (at first I thought it was going to be), I let that story go. I shifted my focus to other things, mainly Aza’s mental health journey, which included her relationship with Davis and Daisy. So to me that was the actual “plot”, and I don’t think the detective story would be helpful with explaining anxiety and OCDs. I wasn’t too concerned about the detective story because that’s not what this book is really about. That plot help the story in the right ways, especially the ending bits, so it wasn’t too much or too little.

I could find JG himself in this book a lot. But I didn’t really feel that while reading it, it came to me in the end when “Aza” talked about the future. That was really John Green speaking wasn’t it. He was telling you that it would be okay, life goes on, and you would be okay. I think he was telling himself that as well since I realised that he suffered from anxiety and OCD. Personally I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand I would like the book to leave it there, with Aza and Davis saying their goodbyes and without Aza talking about how things would turn out in the future. On the other hand, I really appreciated that JG spoke to everyone reading the book, it felt personal and reassuring, especially for someone who have to combat mental illness or who’s going through a hard time.

Reading this book feels like reading John Green’s own blog, like the one Davis had.

I would really love to read more about Davis’ blog though.

This is quite a rushed review and I’m not a native speaker so I apologise for any grammar mistakes. I might revise it when I have the time and the courage to re-read the book ( I really want to but I can’t handle it now).
