  本书是奥地利杰出的作家斯蒂芬·茨威格（1881—1942）以诗人和艺术家的笔触，于1912 年至1940 年间创作的十四篇历史特写（Vierzehn historische Miniaturen）。

  “Miniatur”（译为“特写”）这一概念源自绘画，意为细微画、小品画。它指专绘于面积颇小的物品之上的工笔画，尤指书籍上的小品工笔画。“特写”也用于音乐中。音乐家以随笔或速写的方式，谱写一时的心绪或留住一个特别瞬间。文学中，“特写”意为篇幅相对短小的短故事，中篇小说，轶事，残篇，微型小说，超短小说，闪小说或俳句。它是一种象形的绘画般的书写，以词汇为材料，将事件和场景绘制成画面。
