The text of this Norton Critical Edition of The Importance of Being Earnest is the established three-act version. The play is accompanied by explanatory annotations and by an appendix of excised portions.

"Backgrounds" includes essays on Wilde and the 1890s by prominent cultural critics Joseph Donohue, Regenia Gagnier, and Karl Beckson.

"Reviews and Reactions" collects contemporary responses to The Importance of Being Earnest, among them George Bernard Shaw's famous dissenting view and the American assessment by H. F. "Essays in Criticism" includes six diverse assessments of Wilde and the play by E. H. Mikhail, Camille Paglia, Christopher Craft, Michael Patrick Gillespie, Peter Raby, and Richard Haslam.

A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

Algernon: I really don't see anything romantic in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love. But there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal. Why, one may be accepted. One usually is, I believe. Then the excitement is all over. The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If ever I get married, I'll certainly try to forget the fact.

萧伯纳用明显带有精英分子式的蔑视说(he would confess to a chuckle~):“If the public ever becomes intelligent enough to know when it is really enjoying itself and when it is not, there will be an end of farcical comedy.”

  • Wilde

This is a comedy about four men and women, it also about Earnest and Bundary. It satirizing the hypocrisy and boredom of the British upper class and the so-called high morality and ideal in the Victorian era.

The story has two heroes. One is Jack, Cecily's guardian. However, Jack had been deceiving Cecily that he had a brother named Ernest in London. To help his brother, Jack often had to leave Cecily and go to London. In Cecily's eyes, Jack is a very serious person, because Jack believes that "When one is placed in the position of guardian, one has to adopt a very high moral tone on all subjects". He meets Algernon's cousin, Gwendolen, and falls in love with her. Algernon pretends to have a sick friend on the outskirts of town named Bunbury. He thought that Bunbury is perfectly invaluable. If it wasn 't for Bunbury' s extraordinary bad health, for instance, He would not do what he wants to do.

At the beginning of the story, Jack goes to Algernon's house to propose to Gwendolen. Because Jack left cigarette case in the smoking room the last time he dined here. The two heroes know each other's secret. Next, Gwendolen and her mother, Bracknell, visit. When Bracknell and Algernon go into the musically room.Jack takes this time to propose to Gwendolen. She likes Jack because his name is Ernest. But her mother disagreed because she was upset that Jack had been left in a handbag abandoned when he was a little, until Tom Cardew, who was also Cecily's grandfather, found out and adopted him.Jack tells Algernon, if Gwendolen accepts him, he would going to kill his brother——he's going to find an excuse to announce his brother is dead. And Cecily is too much interested in Ernest. So he is going to get rid of Ernest. Jack plan to baptized and changes his name. Algernon arrives early at Cecily's apartment, as Jack's brother Earnest. Cecily fell in love with Ernest because she had heard so much about him before. She told Jack she and Algernon are planning to marry.

Gwendolen comes to the suburb to meet Jack, but Cecily is alone. The argued over who was Mr Earnest's fiancee. After the two men arrive, Algernon and Jack's secret were at expousure during the conversation. Later the two men were asked why they had lied. After each had given a satisfactory answer, so Cecily and Gwendolen forgave them. Then Bracknell arrives. Algernon also tells Cecily that he and Cecily are engaged. Bracknell is not satisfied with Cecily at first. Bracknell asks Jack about Cecily's background until Bracknell's attitude changes when it comes to Cecily's inheritance. Jack, Cecily's guardian, does not approve of her marriage to Algy unless Bracknell agrees to marry her daughter to him. She still disagreed,Just before she left, she heard about Cecily's tutor, miss Prism, and asked to see her.Prism said that she placed the baby in the handbag, left it in the cloak– room of one of the larger railway stations in London. Jack asks again and takes the bag down from upstairs. They found that the child was Jack himself. Jack's father is Algernon's father, so Jack is Algernon's brother. Jack's Christian name follows his father's, It is Earnest . At last everyone was with his mate together.

    About title

In The title The importance of being Earnest, Ernest and Earnest refer to Jack bunburyist's name. But what the hero does is a complete violation of Earnest, this name revealing the hypocrisy and boredom of high society, as well as the typical seriousness, prudish hypocrisy and lack of humor of Victoria. The ending of the story,“Jack: On the contrary, Aunt Augusta, I 've now realised for the first time in my life the vital Importance of Being Earnest.”He realized the Importance of sincerity, because the above people's hypocrisy and dishonesty, which brought them a lot of trouble, finally found that he was really called Ernest (that is to say, to be a ernest person) to bring about a perfect ending.

两位少女都爱上了“Ernest”( There is something in that name that seems to in-spire absolute confidence ) 因为这个名字让人感觉到放心。

在文中,因为名字而引发双关的句子:①Algernon.:You have always told me it was Ernest. I have introduced you to every one as Ernest. You answer to the name of Ernest. You look as if your name was Ernest. You are the most earnest-looking person I ever saw in my life.

②Algernon:I may mention that I have always suspected you of being a confirmed and secret Bunburyist. And I am quite sure of it now.

Jack:Bunburyist? What on earth do you mean by a Bunburyist?

Algernon:You have invented a very useful younger brother called Ernest,in order that you may be able to come up to town as often as you like.I have invented an invaluable permanent invalid called Bunbury,in order that I may be able to go down into the country whenever I choose.

①Algernon.:I really don’t see anything romantic in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love. But there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal. Why, one may be accepted. One usually is, I believe. Then the excitement is all over. The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If ever I get married, I’ll certainly try to forget the fact.

②Miss Prism. No married man is ever attractive except to his wife.

“A country house! How many bedrooms? Well, that point can be cleared up afterwards. You have a town house, I hope? A girl with a simple, unspoiled nature, like Gwendolen, could hardly be expected to reside in the country.”

①Jack. You really love me, Gwendolen?

    Gwendolen. Passionately!

Jack. Darling! You don’t know how happy you’ve made me.

    Gwendolen. My own Ernest!

Jack. But you don’t really mean to say that you couldn’t love me if my name wasn’t Ernest?

Gwendolen. But your name is Ernest.

Jack. Yes, I know it is. But supposing it was something else? Do you mean to say you couldn’t love me then?

Gwendolen. [Glibly.] Ah! that is clearly a metaphysical speculation, and like most metaphysical speculations has very little reference at all to the actual facts of real life, as we know them

Algernon. But how did we become engaged?

Cecily. Well, ever since dear Uncle Jack first confessed to us that he had a younger brother who was very wicked and bad, you of course have formed the chief topic of conversation between myself and Miss

Prism. And of course a man who is much talked abou attractive. One feels there must be something in him, after all. I daresay it was foolish of me, but I fell in love with you, Ernest.
