And so, says Nathan Lewis, there is no reason to believe that the great monetary successes of the past four centuries, and indeed the past four millennia, could not be recreated in the next four centuries. Governments and central bankers around the world today unanimously agree on the desirability of stable money, ever more so after some monetary disaster has reduced yet another economy to smoking ruins. Lewis shows how gold provides the stability needed to foster greater prosperity and productivity throughout the world. He offers an insightful look at money in all its forms, from the seventh century B.C. to the present day, explaining in straightforward layman’s terms the effects of inflation, deflation, and floating currencies along with their effect on prices, wages, taxes, and debt. He explains how the circulation of money is regulated by central banks and, in the process, demystifies the concepts of supply, demand, and the value of currency. And he illustrates how higher taxes diminish productivity, trade, and the stability of money. Lewis also provides an entertaining history of U.S. money and offers a sobering look at recent currency crises around the world, including the Asian monetary crisis of the late 1990s and the devastating currency devaluations in Russia, China, Mexico, and Yugoslavia.

Lewis’s ultimate conclusion is simple but powerful: gold has been adopted as money because it works. The gold standard produced decades and even centuries of stable money and economic abundance. If history is a guide, it will be done again.

Nathan Lewis was formerly the chief international economist of a firm that provided investment research for institutions. He now works for an asset management company based in New York. Lewis has written for the Financial Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, Japan Times, Pravda, and other publications.   这没想到在《灯塔》和《夏日纪事》里心灵高尚故事美好的夏布特，在早期竟然是怪力乱神，养蛊厌胜。《满月》厚达五百页，收录的三个中篇和系列短篇，都是同类型的悬疑故事。其中最好的确实是《满月》以法国当地人和移民的矛盾为主题，虽然有些白左，但情节的讽刺荒诞，营造光影的精湛技巧，均属上乘；首篇《佐伊》真相令人震惊，结局令人哀叹，但铺垫不足，有些突兀；《野兽》很好看，主线情节类似二十年前让雷诺主演的电影《暗流》，但《野兽》更悲怆更简洁。其余的短篇，一开始看还会觉得有些惊悚，像是大学时收听的深夜精短鬼故事，好在连续看上几篇后，反而觉得很幽默，不那么惊悚了。

  这位叫杜洛瓦的极品渣男，就是一代文豪莫泊桑的长篇代表作《漂亮朋友》的主人公。

  

  从部队复员后穷困潦倒的杜洛瓦，除了漂亮俊朗的外表之外，可以说是一无所长。然而，他却通过偶遇的战友，发现了通往上层社会的阶梯。

  于是，他非常不要脸地利用了自己好看的脸，随机应变，油嘴滑舌，用毫无底线、卑鄙下流的手段，游走于贵妇、女强人和贵族小姐之间，写成了令人作呕的流氓发迹史。

  杜洛瓦常说：“世界属于强者，我应该鹤立鸡群”。为此，他先娶了给他巨大助力的朋友之妻玛德莱娜，又接受了德·马雷尔夫人的投怀送抱，然后勾引了五十岁的老板之妻瓦尔特夫人，在听说瓦尔特夫人的女儿苏珊能分得两三千万法郎嫁妆时，他立刻找理由与玛德莱娜离了婚。

  毫无疑问，莫泊桑获得了巨大成功，而《漂亮朋友》则成为他批判现实主义作品的顶峰之作。这部小说1885年出版，到1887年已再版51次，莫泊桑因此赚得盆满钵满，他甚至专门买了一艘游艇庆祝，这艘私人游艇就被命名为“漂亮朋友号”。

  《我们现在怎样做父亲》？鲁迅给出了答案——“没有法，便只能先从觉醒的人入开手，各自解放了自己的孩子。自己背着因袭的重担，肩住了黑暗的闸门，放他们到宽阔光明的地方去；此后幸福的度日，合理的做人。”

  问题是，百年已逝，觉醒几人？

  鲁迅的方子也不麻烦，“开宗第一，便是理解。。。。。。第二，便是指导。。。。。。第三，便是解放。。。。。。”能做到的，又是几人？

  原本“但祖父子孙，本来各各都生命的桥梁的一级，决不是固定不易的。现在的子，便是将来的父，也便是将来的祖。”固于伦常，“父对于子，有绝对的权力和威严”。 偶有自称“革命”的勃谿子弟，可悲的是，“待到自己有了子女，也决不解放；或者毫不管理，或者反要寻出《孝经》，勒令诵读，想他们‘学于古训’，都做牺牲。”曾经如此，今天也难能例外。

  “父母对于子女，应该健全的产生，尽力的教育，完全的解放。”为什么不呢？

  “但有人会怕，仿佛父母从此以后，一无所有，无聊之极了”。

  “或者又怕，解放之后，父子间要疏隔了。”

  “或者又怕，解放之后，长者要吃苦了。”

  “或者又怕，解放之后，子女要吃苦了。”

  综上，旧道德旧习惯旧方法旧思想作崇，即使今天。为什么如此，“三年无改于父之道可谓孝矣”大行其道，“责望报偿”天经地义，“恩”“爱”混同有悖自然天性。

  记得一朋友儿子“不听话”，父子关系紧张，学习不长进，因此愁眉苦脸忧心忡忡。交流中曾建议与儿子多沟通做朋友少呵斥多尊重，几天下来，得到的反馈无非是——这还了得，反了他了，简直无法无天了。这就是中国的父亲。

  当下，父子两代关系难以调和，已是不争的事实，网上经常讨论，尤其是过年过节，尤其是学习考学入职买房结婚生子，尤其是父辈5060与子辈809000。国将不国没有，父将不父倒有迹象。

  略为注意，不难发现，5060父辈与上辈关系还好，只因“萧规曹随”尚存，新旧矛盾冲突不那么激烈。

  大胆推测，可以预见，809000后父辈与下辈关系将走向缓和，鲁迅的“理解、指导、解放”经过生根发芽将走向开花结果；还可预见的是，强大的“伦常”基因将顽固的继续传承，看看初为人父（母）的年轻一代，就有关于对育儿、特长班、奥数和竞赛的热衷，可略猜一般。

  幸运的是，生物要进化，技术在进步，人们对“美好生活的向往”也在转变。以后，或者不久的将来，做不做父亲，怎样做父亲，将不‘’是一件伟大的要紧的事情，也不会是一件极困苦艰难的事‘’了。那，只是以后，现在仅仅初见端倪。
