• A journey for seeking identity

  This memoir This Boy’s Life is written by Tobias Wolff. It mainly talks about the author’s childhood and youth. If we look at this book from a whole-picture vision, I can say that the author’s past time is not very bracing or happy. It is consisted of departure, violence, avoidance, and so on. There is not a definite theme in this book and you can identify a consistent tone throughout the memoir.

  A person’s internal personality and external environment are inseparable, and they will affect and complement each other to create an integrated human being. When the author was a boy, his parents divorced and he left with his mother. Their dreams of transformation are great. However, life is tough for them and reality let them down over and over again. Poorness, solitude, and feeling of unworthy, all these experiences affect his personality. He becomes a naughty boy, and he does a lot of bad things. In turn, these bad things lead to further effects such as punishments which will make author become more defiant.

  The author’s one character is that he is always seeking for other people’s identification. He always wants to escape the ground he stands on and go to a new place so that those people would not know his dirty past. However, every time he tried to create a mask, he was looked through by someone or exposed by himself. The origin could be traced back to his childhood. He doesn’t want others to know his family’s unhappy parts so he lies a lot. In addition to accusing him for his wrong doings, I feel pity for him. He is a boy who is injured from his parents’ divorce.

  His mother reforms a family and this becomes a beginning of nightmare. At the beginning, Dwight disguised himself very well, and the author and his mother failed to recognize the real aspect of this man. After they formed a new family, cracks were exposed gradually. He is vain, violent, and he has ridiculous dignity. He must regard him as a king in this family. If somebody disobeys his order, he will go crazy and emotional. Because of the existence of the author’s stepfather, he didn’t get enough care and love, so he wants to escape this family. In order to do this, he did a lot. Such as seeking help from his brother, friends, and relatives.

  In my opinion, the author has conscience even though he had done something very bad. He cares about his mother, and he wants to make her become happy; he will accompany with his mother when his mother is crying and feeling desperate; he will feel sorry for Welches even though he couldn’t apologize to Welches. Life shapes him.
