Doors drummer

Densmore, who had a love-hate relationship with lead singer

Morrison, sympathetically chronicles the self-destructive Lizard

King's rise and fall. "Densmore's detailed account . . . is often

narrated in a glib style" but remains "indispensable for fans of

one of rock music's most flamboyant and controversial groups," said

“I didn’t want him to be the old bluesman. Like his audience, I wanted him to stay the young prince.”

  • most objective account about The Doors

    作者:Right is Wrong 发布时间:2012-12-17 19:43:50

Finally finished the three The Doors books in row. My reading order is: NOHGOA, light my fire, and riders on the storm. This coincides my rankings for them, from worst to best.

I really got disappointed about Jim Morrison after reading NOHGOA. He is just Jim Morrison, nothing mysterious or intangible. And it reminded me an old comment about Jimi Hendrix:” He is too week. But if you want to rock ‘n’ roll, you can’t be too week, you have to be a very tough.” And I started to reflect a lot about my fascination about Jim: the atmosphere that seduced me is created mainly words from Jim or music by The Doors? Imagine if Jim Morrison is in another band, will I still love him so much? I have no answer, because there is not such if. Jim Morrison’s word is inseparable with The Doors music. Another thing that hurts me in NOHGOA is, it mentioned so few what The Doors meant to Jim Morrison. It seems the members came together merely for job. A very cold and indifferent attitude, which really baffled me. There can’t be nothing in group, neither love nor conflicts.

Light My Fire from Ray Manzarek is radically different from NOHGOA. Ray praised highly even made Jim like a God (real Dionysus). My favorite parts in that book is Ray talked about his drug experiences and life details which gave me a detailed 60s life portrait. It untangled many my doubts about 60s ideas, such as how psychedelic born, why people were so indulging in drugs, sex etc. And Ray talked in a very “gentle father” tone. Without doubts, he loved The Doors and highly respected Jim Morrison. But I thought he tended to exaggerate a lot of emotions and facts, not only with The Doors stuffs, but also about his private life (is it influenced by his Japanese wife?). The last chapters he wrote about Jim Morrison is especially very overdo. A surprise bonus Ray delivered in LMF is his candid confession where his music inspirations came from and how many The Doors musics had conceived. Another discover in Ray’s book, is how he satirized the sycophants around Jim, who were categorized as friends in NOHGOA. Or in another words, he blamed Jim in choosing the wrong groups (very father, isn’t it?). Although Jim said to Ray that he wanted to live like a shooting star, I though he didn’t fulfill this definition: he didn’t burn out fully at all, he self destructed too early. His talents in The Doors is only a small take off of his ability.

In The Doors, the division was clear: Ray was closer with Jim, John and Robby stood on another side. The first few chapters in Riders On The Storms I was very surprised by John’s straightness about his anger toward Jim. But overall, this is the most objective account I read about The Doors. John Densmore pointed out the fatal problem in The Doors: the silence, “ Everyone pretend to not see the elephant in the room and simply walked around it. There are elephant shit everywhere on the floor, but all pretend there is nothing there” . Ray said in his book he felt guilty of not helping Jim, so did John. But John knew very well it is more about their own escapism and fears to confront the “unstoppable problem”(before you really tried hard, how can you said it was surely unstoppable?). I am very touched that John told the stories by writing letters to Jim, about their later unsatisfying developments, troubles in life. Ironically, he confessed all these stuff to someone he once hated so much. Maybe he isn’t really writing to Jim Morrison or the readers, this man is communicating with his own heart about his life. Ray stated several times in his book that John never understood Jim, and John confessed too that a lot of things about Jim he never came to understand. Anyway I don’t think Ray knew Jim much better than John did. And John is much humble on this issue. I love the part about post-The Doors situation. Ray rarely spoke about that. We can glimpse a little the reason why “John showed and was heard so few afterwards” as described by Ray: John pissed Ray tried to establish another band to replace The Doors and other commercial issues.

It was so horrifying when Paul Rothchild told the three doors that they were experiencing one of the most special psychological state, they have to make as many music as possible before Jim collapsed. This is benefiting from others’ pains. I understood his intention but really it was too selfish and merciless.

Reading about John’s sarcasm about NOHGOA reminded me a thing few years ago. When a schoolmate died for a sudden disease, many people popped out claiming as this girl’s “friends” to reminisce her. I really don’t appreciate such promotion.

Falling in love with the poetic lyrics because of The Doors. Leonard Cohen and Syd Barett seem to be great topics for further reading.
