　　Anna McQuinn, is trained as a teacher specializing in children's literature. She has been working in children's publishing for more than sixteen years as an editor, a publisher and writer. She also runs workshops and courses for small children in schools and libraries. Anna lives in Reading, England with her husband and daughters. Sophie Fatus is a full-time illustrator and sculptress who studied at the prestigious Academy of Fine Art in Paris. Her brightly coloured illustrations and quirky style are world-renowned and have graced the pages of many Barefoot books including Babushka, The Real Princess, and Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.

  浏览headwords还以为难度太低，举的同义词似乎也都认得，以为无用。不过认得不见得能用好，稍读几条就知道组编的内容很用心（具体而言就是所举同义词并非生搬硬造，为辨析而辨析，而是提示己所未见，助益表达），精致宜读，极有用处。此外装帧制作也尽善尽美，精美绝伦。

  设计制作

  从置于扉页的图解化Guide to Entries开始到词条正文，设计确实精心到位，learner's名副其实；字体、设色与OALD一系，用纸印刷也都上佳（淡黄色纸，比牛津高阶和搭配词典厚实）；唯一不那么光辉的只有画蛇添足的中文序，说的都是序言、指南和使用说明中已经说得详尽、诚恳且更高明的内容，比不上《牛津短语》的陆序；此为原文版，本就是细微处辨析的书，中文翻译恐怕也没什么意义；

  目测商务出的英文版完美呈现了原貌（不是每次都能做到吧。比如牛津高阶7的商务英文版在印刷和用纸上就逊色于双解版），丝毫不逊色于牛津原版，价格只有后者的1/4（以亚马逊为例），实在超值。

  内容

  每一组同义词由用法/搭配(Patterns and Collocations)、释义、辨析(Note)三个板块组成：

  1) 搭配信息稍显鸡肋，需要了解时（用电脑版的话）很容易调出牛津搭配词典；

  2) 释义是主体部分，基本是照搬牛津高阶，外加几条能够说明区分性的用例；

  3) 对个别词有辨析。

  综上，其实这本词典的讲解性也并不强，基本还是一份（很好的）词目。对易混词的分辨并不是它的强项（比如我自己觉得值得辨析下的sympathy / empathy，本书就未直接比较，只是分别归到了be sorry for和understand目下，相比之下 Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms 的辨析就很深切。然而在语料库、大型和更大型词典唾手可得的条件下，分辨词义和用法也不需要依赖一部特定的同义词词典了），相反，举出近似表达，拓展学习者语言的丰富度和准确度才是这本词典的能量所在。

  比如当我想查be frank about的替代词时，得到的结果就是满意的：

  HONEST: direct, open, outspoken, straight, blunt, sincere, truthful, forthright, straightforward, candid...

• 值得阅读的一本书

  这本书风格很像东野圭吾，心理描写特别出彩，同样也有太宰治的味道，刚刚看完人间失格和斜阳，再看这样一本作品真是很棒的体验，一个平凡人所有选择造成了最后的结局，能把欧美作家的作品给出日本作家风格，可见译者的阅读与知识丰富，从译名同样可以看出译者的水平，很像傅东华给乱世佳人起名为飘一样，引人入胜
