At least partially drawn from LeDuff's former "Bending Elbows" column in the New York Times's Sunday City section (available only in the five boroughs), the pieces collected here sketch various habitues of city saloons, mostly working men. Clearly in the grip of some potent nostalgia for John O'Hara, LeDuff is, to his credit, pretty respectful of his subjects-bartenders and lounge singers, bankrupt dot-commers and prison inmates, lighthouse keepers and firemen, homeless freaks and transsexual hustlers-basically anyone who fits into his particular concept of poignant, grubby, overlooked humanity. His carefully dry, clipped style honors their experiences and habits, but with the notable exception of one sequence on immigrant laborers in a Long Island suburb, he does little to advance the interests of his subjects. And while LeDuff does provide a handful of familiar female types-a faded chorus girl, a stricken widow, a runaway teenager, a pair of 50-ish spinsters looking for "Mr. Dreamy" and a few old mamas-the city's female workers evidently don't rate as worthy of the name. LeDuff, who now covers L.A. life and lifestyles for the Times, won a Pulitzer in 2001 for a series on race, and produces some nice counterpoints of prejudices, sentiments, pearls of wisdom, and non sequiturs. "When the cocktail set tells me they enjoy the cast of losers... I smile and drink their liquor. They don't know what work is." That may be true, but it's equally clear, with myriad de*ions like "a Laura Ashley girl gone wrong," that LeDuff is writing for them.

Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Charlie LeDuff gives his incomparable take on the city and its denizens-the bars, the workingmen, the gamblers, the eccentrics, the lonesome, and the wise.

Work and Other Sins is filled to burst with stories of the fascinating, one-of-a-kind characters who populate the modern metropolis. In these pages we meet a Long Island used-car salesman; a professional Santa; the men who change the light bulbs atop the Empire State Building; a Sinatra imitator; a retired Harlem chorus-line girl; a lighthouse keeper; a saloon priest; Latin lovers; a host of barroom regulars; and myriad others-all of whom present their take on working, drinking, gambling, dying, and countless other facts of life. Charlie LeDuff takes us to the watering holes, prisons, veterans' hospitals, firehouses, apartment buildings, baseball fields, and graveyards that make up the landscape of modern life. Also included is LeDuff's acclaimed series of articles on Squad One, the Brooklyn firehouse that suffered devastating losses on September 11, as well as his Pulitzer Prize-winning piece on workers in a North Carolina slaughterhouse.

LeDuff captures the spirit of the people and places he profiles with a dead-on feel for character and idiom and his signature wry wit. But more than that, LeDuff lets his characters speak for themselves. What results is at turns riotous, dirt-under-the-nails, contemplative, salty, joyous, whiskey tinged-an utterly unique vision of life in the Big Apple and beyond.

  • Here's New York

New York is a glamorous city, and full of glamorous people. This is a city where you can find entrepreneurs, lawyers, bankers, investment bankers, and movie stars ect., where people dress well and eat well, where people shops in big and fancy stores. We get to know New York from TV serials such as Friends and the Sex and the City, in which people are fashionable, holding nice jobs and attending various parties. New York is a place, where people around the world want to go and stay and one day call themselves a New Yorker.

Charlie LeDuff, the reporter of the New York Times brings you a different New York, working people’s New York city. His book “Work and Other Sins: Life in New York City and Thereabout” is about doorman’s life, not about the life of the people who has a doorman.

The book is actually a collection of columns that published in the New York Times, each is a short story about an ordinary working people in the Big Apple, doorman, grave digger, Professional Santa, bartender, Indian workers who lie steel for skyscrapers driving back to reservation in Canada every Friday afternoon and coming to work in New York every Monday, antenna tuner who change bulbs on the top of the Empire State building. They are immigrants of the Big Apple, from Indiana, from Ohio, from Indian reservation, from Casablanca, from places around the world. They come to New York for their dreams. And Have their dreams been fulfilled? Only they know.

You were brought to their lives, where is no fashion clothes, no fashion parties, nothing connect them with the fashionable cosmopolitan city. But they contribute to the growth of the city. Will they be forgot? They cannot answer. When a door man who opened the same door for 33 years retired, he received a note from a young girl who lives in the building: Don’t go, please, I love you. But he has to go. New York is a place to make a living. I was, once, made a living in the New York City. And that's before 911. When time was good and people spend a lot on Christmas.

This is a book about nobody in America and American nobody is very important to the author. This book reminds me of nobody in China and the nobody in China is very important to me. The book reminds of a poem:

    I am nobody,

    Who are you?

    Are you nobody too?
