      近来和玛丽这个名字总是很有缘，从纳博科夫的玛丽到多丽丝的玛丽，两个尽管名字相同，但是遭遇却各不相同。

      《野草在歌唱》是我在看完后让我失眠的书。有时候想想，本能地活着比思考地活着来得更快乐。多丽丝的玛丽，从少女时代起便本能地活着，她悠游于青春的长河里，不去想童年时歇斯底里的母亲，酗酒的父亲还有贫困潦倒的生活，她每逢想起“家”，就会记起那所像鸽子笼似的木头小屋，火车一经过，房子就震动 ；一想到结婚，就记起父亲生前回家来那种醉得眼睛通通红的模样 ；一想起孩子，就记起哥哥姐姐死了时，母亲那副哭丧着脸的样子，既悲痛，又那样冷若冰霜。她喜欢别人的孩子，但是一想到自已生孩子，就心惊胆战。看到人家结婚，就觉得伤感，她不愿意记起这许多事情，她一心一意地要把这些事情忘了。她也不去计划末来，只是，满腔热情地投入于她那自得其乐的三十岁之前的生活里。

      三十岁之后，她学会了思考。这来源于外界对于她三十岁还末结婚的种种猜测中。她是对男人那样的惧怕，可是，她却抵不住流言的力量。自己对于生活的幻想，在事实面前或是在某种抽象原理面前破灭是件可怕的事情，她自信在瞬间破灭。她隐隐得觉得内心的空虚及一种不知道来自何处的恐慌。最后，她遇到了迪克，这个男人把她当作天下唯一的宝贝。她很迫切地需要这种情感，她需要借此来恢复自已的自信。她很仓促地嫁给了只见过两面的农场主迪克。这两个孤独无依的人，期望能相互取暖，相互给予生活的热望。

      只是，玛丽的那种希望通过结婚换一个环境，安静地生活的念想，与实际有着深深的落差。她一定要“接近自然”，而这话只是从她所读的一些怡情快意的伤感小说中学习来的，这些，都是提纯抽象了的世界，她所认为的自然也就是周末去野餐，坐在树阴里，听听手提留声机里放出的舞曲，本质上还是留恋城市生活的，逛街、去公司办公，城市生活对于她来讲，依然是有着诱人的吸引力的。她所知道的婚姻生活与之想象的也是有落差的。她并不知道贫穷的处境是怎样的一种境地，多年的还算悠游的城市生活，使她无法想象得出乡村的贫穷是何种的境地。她只是认为这种贫穷与她备受折磨的童年生活毫无关系，她只是把它看做一件和艰苦环境做斗争的事情。事实上，在她走进那个“家”时，她就后悔了，空旷的田野里，怪鸟飞过，树林间回旋着诡异的风，寒酸破旧简陋的家俱，而她，只是迪克孤独的单身生活的终结者、陪伴者，更重要的是：她无比恐惧地感觉到，她在这里的生活，将与她母亲的生活一般无二，而这，恰恰是她最为惧怕的结果。

      但是，那时的玛丽，对于新生活，毕竟还是充满希望的。她并不觉得糟到那个地步。迪克对于她，低声下气，在这一点上，极大地满足了她的自我优越感。这个男人并没有她想象得那样可怕，他是有温度的，有血有肉的，而绝不是她想象中的那种有手有嘴而没有肉的男人。她用光了她的积蓄，来装扮自己的新家，她每天早上锣声一响便起床，与迪克喝茶，送迪克去田里，精神饱满、意志坚决，使生活过得很有乐趣。但是，当她最后无事可做的时候，一种不安与心灵的荒芜感便窜生出来。她看完了所有的可看的书，却还是那样的无措。

      而她那种骄傲感也被现实一点一点地擦拭掉。她无法与附近的农场主的妻子们沟通，她们的那种话题，引不起她的兴趣，而她对于别人的自傲，也使自已被排斥在圈子的外面。她唯一可以相处的人，就是迪克。而迪克，却将时间大把大把地花在了田地里。对于那些土人，她从小接受的种族观念，也使她无法与之平等相处，对于这些人，她是白人，她本能地对黑人充满了敌意和戒心。白人的优越及白人与土人间的仇恨感，势必使她孤立在土人的世界之外。她就这样被抛弃在各个圈子的外面。

      而她与迪克之间因为生活环境、思想理念、社会观念不同而导致的鸿沟越来越大。迪克对于她，从开始的讨好逐步变化为对她的冷漠、无视。她对于土人的冷酷、挑剔，使迪克越发地不可理解她。而迪克对于农场的经营方式，玛丽一眼就看出了为什么无法获利的原因，可是，这两个人，是倔强的人，相互之间无法妥协，用冷笑、轻蔑的意味来彼此嘲笑对方。迪克尝试养蜂、尝试开小店、尝试养猪、养吐绶鸡，可是，他性格的缺陷使之总是半途而废而玛丽给予他的建议，他一个都听不进去，甚至挖苦。这样的境遇，使玛丽更加怀念起旧时时光的好来，她尝试出逃，回到那个曾经快乐的生活里。可是，生活却很残酷地告诉她：之前的生活，她已回不去了。她早已被它抛弃！她只能回到她那个让她索然无味的生活里。

      迪克也尝试去改变生活，但是，他在打击面前，早已不再是之前那个血气方刚，气血旺盛的人了，贫穷早已使他处处小心翼翼，步步为营了。玛丽一再的鼓励也无济于事。她想挽救她的婚姻，也想挽救她自己，可是，一次次地在这个封闭的农场里的交锋中都败下阵来。她在这个密闭的牢笼里，如苍蝇般地乱撞，求生，可是，她是敌不过这个强大的环境的。她也不了解社会与自身关系的重要性。她所知道的是：生活于她，是无望的了。她就象一朵花儿，迅速地萎顿，枯竭。罗德里亚那炽热的阳光也无法温暖她那冰冷死寂的心灵了。

      如果说黑人摩西的出现，还能让她觉得人世间还有一点温暖的话，那么，她活着尚许有一点意义。可是，他的出现，玛丽在内心深处早已预感到了等待在生命尽头的结果只会是厄运。但是，摩西给予她的是她所渴望的安慰、爱抚、关怀和力量，还有一点点生命的热度。而他们之间的这种暧昧，是敌不过玛丽内心强大的种族观念的。

      她一步步地被动地接受环境与命运的摆布，她不知道自由的本质。生活每掠夺一次她的情感时，她便关起一扇窗户，直到再也没有什么可夺去时，她也就只能活在那个令人窒息的自我世界里了。

      罗德里亚湿热的气候，会促使她那个屋子边藤蔓的迅速成长，藤蔓会穿过破碎的窗户，长驱直入地爬满她的床，她的桌子、她的厨房，然后快速地将一切掩埋掉，而她，所有的希望、爱情、婚姻、热情、健康、快乐、青春、智慧，都被生活这根藤蔓一一包裹起来，越包越紧，最后碎成粉沫，甚至连生命的躯壳也不留，一起吞噬得干干净净。

      有人看完这本书失声痛哭，她说，生活没有参照也就罢了，浑然不知地过着日子，可是一旦这个硬茧被剥离出来，赤裸裸地摆在眼前时，对于生活、婚姻、爱情的失落与顿悟是让人难以抑制住悲伤的。那种埋藏于心底的东西，想要倾诉却无从倾诉时的那种绝望，象足了玛丽当时的心情，所以，她将自己怕活动空间越缩越小，小到连自己的心房都容不下这种沉重的压抑感与无助感。还好，她只是有一点小触动，经历没有玛丽复杂，生活于她，还是有很多希望的。

      多丽丝奶奶的书，阅读之时，是很流畅的，文字饱满坚实，没有晦涩的意象，没有激烈的冲突，只是，心平气和地讲述，波澜不惊里，让人感受到生活的艰难，女性生存的不易，还有种族的、文化背景对于人的影响。

  Adjective like nice/beautiful are opinion adjectives. They tell us somebody thinks of something or somebody.

  Opinion adjectives usually go before fact adjectives.

  Often we use quite with a positive idea and rather with a negative idea:

  She's quite intelligent but rather lazy.

  When we use rather with positive word, it means'unusually' or 'surprisingly'.
