  《留德十年》记述了季羡林先生从1935年到1945年赴德留学，因二战而滞留德国十年间的事情。

  季先生是清华毕业，到济南中学任教一年后，考取公派，半公费赴德，在哥廷根学习古印度语言。本应于2年后归国，因二战爆发，成为汪伪政府不承认的留学生，只得申请难民资格。不想一呆就是十年，战争结束后才辗转回到祖国。十年间，与德国人和德国文化水乳交融，深受哥廷根大学语言学家们的厚爱，言传身教，获益良多。十年间，埋首学问，克服战时困难，潜心研究，终成大器。因战事滞留德国致家国殊途固然不幸，然因此继承古印度语衣钵，并在偏于一隅的哥廷根免于战祸得以幸存，则是不幸中之大幸。人生的选择，有时就是这样奇妙。

  Love and Forgiveness

  Regardless of the imperfections, mistakes, hatred, all of them, Desperaux (a mouse), Princess Pea, the King, Roscuro (a rat), Miggery Sow sat down at the same table together to enjoy a delicious soup meal at the end of the story. None of their dreams are completely fulfilled, Deperaux did not marry Princess Pea, Princess Pea couldn't get her mother back, same with the King. Roscuro cannot live under the light, Miggery Sow didn't become a princess. However, that did not prevent them from having a happy life and being happy with what was achieved. Desperaux could be with the Princess and he did rescue her. Princess Pea forgave the rats and Miggery Sow. Miggery Sow was sympathized and had friends who cared for her. Roscuro was no longer denied the access to light. Desperaux was attracted to love, music and bravery. Roscuro was attracted to light. Miggery Sow was attracted to beauty. All of them longed for a better life. The happy ending was possible because of love and forgiveness. With love and forgiveness in our heart, nothing can't be healed, no dream can't be dreamed, no hatred can't be removed.

  The other characters in the Tale

  Antoinett only saw her son Desperaux's physical size but not the size of his heart. The father and brother of Desperaux are victims of traditions and norms which forbid them to see the soft part of being a creature of a society, with beating heart and thinking brain. What makes them mouse/men are not because that they can conform to rules, but because of their capacity to love and think. The king's sadness can't be erased by getting rid of all rats and banning soup. Because sadness is a decease of heart, so it can only be cured by heart, not by things. Miggery Sow's father stands for those who sold themselves short in life, who are indeed stupid and do not recognize their stupidity. The uncle of Miggery Sow stands for those who are cruel and desperate and they try to make others same as themselves, miserable, cruel and desperate. Miggery Sow though lived in a harmful condition, she did not lose hope. The jailor Gregory though lived in the dungeon all his life, he did not forget the meaning of light and the power of story. Story is a source of light and life to him in a dark world.

  Mice, Rats and Man

  What becomes of a mouse that do no behave, feel and think like a mouse? He was considered strange, and was an outcast. However, each of us is distinct. We are all unique beings with different senses and dreams. Desperaux could have spent his life trying to be like others, but then he would lose his identity as Desperaux. What's ironic is that depsite his name means despair and disappointment, he became the opposite of it. It's also interesting that the smallest creature in the story ended up as the biggest hero of it. A name does not represent who you are, but what you belive and what you do will be the signature you carry around. Roscuro is another special one of its kind. He was determined to get what he wants and he is really offended when others think he can't be more than what he is. He was good at doing what he was taught to do (unlike Desperaux), but he could not betray his true heartfelt desire for light. What happened was tragic, even for a small rat that was looked down upon could have rage and big revenge that can greatly disturb the world of big men. Never look down upon anyone, even if a rat.
